Looking Back on a Tragedy With Energy and Respect

It was smart of CNN to send Anderson Cooper to Afghanistan, not ground zero, for the fifth anniversary of 9/11.
Afghanistan is where this all started. Ground zero is where innocence ended. That was obvious throughout the slow, mournful roll call of victims’ names at the World Trade Center memorial service — a public tribute to private family tragedies, more than 2,700 of them, one after another.
It was just as clear on MSNBC, which chose to rebroadcast the “Today” show of Sept. 11, 2001. Until the second plane hit the south tower that morning, Katie Couric and Matt Lauer assumed, like almost everyone else, that the first plane crash was an accident. What stands out now is how calm they seemed as reality sank in and things kept getting worse, and how little anyone really understood at the time.
It is painful, but not difficult, to memorialize Sept. 11 on television. There are so many images from that morning, so many ways to recreate its horror and mourn those who died.
President Bush used that sadness and rekindled anger as a frame to challenge criticism of the Iraq war in his televised address. “We face an enemy determined to bring death and suffering into our homes,” he said from the Oval Office. “America did not ask for this war, and every American wishes it were over. So do I. But the war is not over — and it will not be over until either we or the extremists emerge victorious.”
The day of ceremony, remembrance and wreath-laying was bracketed by fresh scenes of violence in Iraq and Afghanistan and renewed jitters at home. Al Qaeda’s second-in-command, Ayman al-Zawahri, issued his own tribute, a video warning that new attacks were imminent.
In Afghanistan, a suicide bomber blew himself up at the funeral of the assassinated governor of Paktia. A United Airlines flight from Atlanta to San Francisco was diverted after an unclaimed BlackBerry was found on board. In New York, Pennsylvania Station was evacuated for a while.
For New Yorkers especially, yesterday unfolded with that same sense of sorrow and unease that darkened the entire fall of 2001.
CNN provided the morning’s most ambitious fifth anniversary special by weaving together a time line of pivotal moments on Sept 11, 2001. Besides covering the president and Laura Bush as they paid their respects in New York, in Pennsylvania and at the Pentagon, CNN brought out witnesses in those places who recounted their memories.
A CNN reporter, Jonathan Freed, was at the Norad command center in Colorado to review what took place there five years ago. From there, he was the first to report that United Flight 351 was being rerouted for fear of a terrorist bomb — a precaution that fortunately proved unnecessary. Mr. Freed’s live bulletins may have needlessly alarmed viewers, but they did evoke the pinpricks of tension that are a legacy of Sept. 11.
Sometimes CNN switched to the ceremony at ground zero, at others it went overseas to a forward base in Afghanistan where Mr. Cooper had gone to observe American soldiers gather for their own commemoration in the field. As he spoke onscreen about being on the “frontline” of the war on terror, the men suddenly broke into a run behind him, rushing to escape incoming fire. (To his credit, Mr. Cooper, who was on live, kept talking and didn’t duck or run.)
Throughout all those zigzags, CNN held its own tribute — the news crawl at the bottom of the screen showed a candle and the word “remembering” as the names of the victims spilled across the screen, all day.
At 9:05 a.m. yesterday, CNN showed the clip of that exact moment five years ago in a classroom in Sarasota, Fla., when President Bush first learned that the county was under attack, and sat frozen in his seat. CNN accompanied it with an interview with the teacher who sat next to Mr. Bush at the blackboard, and she recalled that she knew something was wrong by the look in his eyes.
Hours before the president attended the ceremony for Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pa., CNN interviewed an assistant volunteer fire chief, Rick King, at the same time that, five years earlier, he was on his porch talking by cellphone to his sister when he saw a fireball in the distance and rushed to the scene of smoke and tangled metal. “I just looked around, and no people,” he recalled. “I was thinking, Where are the people?”
All the news programs covered the anniversary with energy, respect and exhaustive detail. CNN found a way to relive the day hour by hour without losing track of the world around it.

Mr. Richie’s new album, “Coming Home,” will be released today.
“Young people come up to me all the time and say, ‘Oh my God, you’re Nicole Richie’s dad; I just saw you on ‘The Simple Life,’ ” he said one recent morning in his sprawling Manhattan hotel suite. “They have no idea who I am or what I’ve done.”
What he’s done in his three-decades-long career is sell nearly 100 million albums worldwide, win five Grammys and earn an Oscar and a Golden Globe for his hit “Say You, Say Me,” from the “White Nights” soundtrack. While he enjoyed success with the R&B band the Commodores, Mr. Richie became a household name with his solo debut, “Lionel Richie,” and its even more successful follow-up, “Can’t Slow Down,” which on the strength of ballads like “Stuck on You” and “Penny Lover” sold more than 10 million copies. He used his fame for good when he and Michael Jackson wrote “We Are the World,” a song that raised more than $50 million for African famine relief.
In recent years his once blazing hot career has cooled, but now Mr. Richie is hoping to regain relevance with a new album, “Coming Home,” which will be released today by Island/Def Jam. In an effort to ensure that his latest effort doesn’t end up being largely ignored like several of his recent albums, he has teamed up with young hit-making producers like Jermaine Dupri, Dallas Austin and Raphael Saadiq. “I asked them, ‘What does Lionel Richie sound like in 2006?’ ” Mr. Richie said, “And they said, ‘The same way he sounded like in 1976 — we’ll just bring you new beats.’ ”
While the album’s feel and lyrics are vintage Richie, the beats are indeed updated. “I Call It Love,” for example, sounds like a track that could have easily appeared on the album by the young R&B singer Ne-Yo. “All Around the World,” with its aggressive horns and strings, could be dubbed “All Night Long 2006.” And Mr. Dupri said “What You Are” was his modern interpretation of “Hello.” Still, Mr. Dupri, who helped resurrect Mariah Carey’s floundering career, said he was not interested in turning Mr. Richie into the next Usher or Justin Timberlake.
“It’s the same thing I told Mariah: an older artist has to deal with reality,” he said. “You’re not going to get younger, so you’ve just got to get better. I’m not going to have a bunch of rappers on his album. It’s about the music, not about someone trying to be hip.”
Antonio Reid, chairman of Island/Def Jam, said he was not too concerned about “Coming Home” becoming a runaway success, an interesting admission for a label executive. “We’re all doing this as a labor of love,” he said. “Sales are secondary. I’m excited to see him doing his thing, smiling, singing; I’m enjoying watching him and the creative process.”
Wearing designer jeans, a Roberto Cavalli shirt and tons of silver jewelry, Mr. Richie, 57, was dressed like a man half his age.
He appeared to be enjoying his newfound visibility. He is featured in a joke in the not-so-romantic comedy, “The Break-Up,” starring Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn. A recent commercial for Starburst candy parodies the video for his ballad “Hello.” “I love it all,” he said. “I’m waiting for the Viagra people to call me and ask to use ‘All Night Long.’ ”
Nevertheless, he owes much of his current popularity to his daughter Nicole, whose chic get-ups, ever-shrinking waistline and high-profile feud with Paris Hilton (the two star on the reality series “The Simple Life”) has kept the Richie name in the headlines and on magazine covers for nearly three years. He’s done little to distance himself from his daughter. In fact, he appears to be capitalizing on their relationship. She appears in the video for his first single from the new album, “I Call It Love,” and last week the two were interviewed together on “20/20.”
He beams when speaking about her, though he admits he is concerned about her weight, or lack there of. “It scares me to death,” said Mr. Richie, who has two other children. A recent tabloid magazine cover, which featured a photograph of her running on the beach in a baggy blue bikini, upset him, he said.
“I called her over to the house and asked, ‘What’s going on here?’ ” he recalled. Mr. Richie said her doctors had assured him that she is neither bulimic nor anorexic but that her weight loss was a result of stress from being in the spotlight.
“Some people take fame and pressure and get fat, some get skinny, some get addicted to drugs, but she’s already been through that, so she’s not going back there,” Mr. Richie said of his daughter, who was once addicted to heroin. “She’s just got to find her rhythm and she‘ll be fine, but I always tell her, ‘Get used to it, kid, because it doesn’t get any better.’ ”
Mr. Richie knows about the perils of fame. During the interview, which took place shortly after a promotional concert in Bryant Park that was broadcast on “Good Morning America,” he recalled the insanity that was once his life. While running through a crowd after a solo concert in New York years ago, he said an overzealous fan cut away a portion of his leather jacket with a knife. “That was crazy,” he said. “I didn’t even know the entire back was missing until I got back to my hotel.”
He said he prefers a more subdued existence now. “There was a point in my life when I was very comfortable with people chasing me down the street and tearing my clothes off,” he said. “But then you start to think, will I be happier with a career or the pandemonium?”
“The career,” he went on. “Will I be happier with a hit record or a great copyright that lasts forever? I’ll take the copyright. But you only learn something like that after you’ve been through the pandemonium.”
Those copyrights have served him well over the years. Unlike some performers of his generation, Mr. Richie isn’t hurting for cash. He owns a substantial amount of real estate in Los Angeles and lives in a 30-room mansion in Beverly Hills, which he used to share with his wife, Diana Alexander, who divorced him in 2004. He performs not because he needs to, but because he wants to.
“As a writer and a performer, if you’re going to be in the business, you always have to spar,” he said. “You’re always have to find out if you still have it, if it’s still there. And it’s not like the sports business, where your knees give out, and you retire. In the music business that’s just not the case.”
Mr. Richie couldn’t help taking a swipe at the crop of new artists. “Today we’ve learned to celebrate mediocrity,” he said. “Back in the day we had creative artists; today we have created artists.”

Talk about bucking a trend. In today’s opera world, where Handel productions are sprouting up right and left, such a statement verges on the politically incorrect. It is all the more incongruous coming from a singer who has built her reputation on the foundation of early music; who has sung and recorded a good number of Handel operas; whose new Virgin Classics CD features Handel and Johann Adolf Hasse; and who is to make her New York City Opera debut tonight in “Semele,” a dramatic oratorio-cum-opera by, of course, Handel.
“I used to accept Handel operas because I knew I was missing something,” Ms. Genaux said, half laughing at herself. “Handel has a lot of virtuosity, but it always strikes me as being a little more instrumental than vocal. I always have to keep myself on a short leash when I’m singing Handel. I’ve never yet done a Handel where I can just let it all out. But I finally had my little raptus when I was doing Handel concerts in the spring. I finally like Handel. It’s so cool.”
And not a moment too soon. This season she is scheduled to do three new Handel roles.
Ms. Genaux, 37, exudes an exotic fascination. Her small face is dominated by wide eyes and a Julia Roberts smile that give her a distinctive, elfin beauty that she has parlayed into androgyny in stage portrayals of a couple of dozen men — the trouser roles that are the bread and butter of a mezzo Baroque specialist.
Her voice is as striking as her looks: less striking, even, for the light, free upper notes or rich chocolaty lower ones than for the runs of coloratura that she releases with jackhammer speed, gunfire precision and the limpid continuity of spring raindrops.
She is also an international star, particularly in the early-music world. So it is notable that she has been away from New York for so long. In the late 1990’s she was practically a fixture in this city, staking out the bel canto terrain with annual appearances at the nearby Caramoor International Music Festival; a production of Rossini’s “Cenerentola” with the Opera Orchestra of New York; and an acclaimed debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1997, substituting for Vesselina Kasarova in Rossini’s “Barbiere di Siviglia,” on a week’s notice.
Ms. Genaux subsequently went off to Europe and made her first solo album, “Arias for Farinelli,” featuring music written for the 18th century’s most famous castrato and winning accolades from every corner — except, evidently, the Met, which thanked her with a couple more appearances in “Barbiere” and then silence. She did give New York recitals in 2002 and 2005, but she hasn’t appeared in New York opera for some time.
Ms. Genaux is philosophical about her absence from the Met. “There’s probably a bit of incompatibility involved,” she said. “I don’t have a huge voice. The productions that I have done in larger houses have not been the highest on my list in terms of personal enjoyment. I’m lucky in the Baroque that you usually get to do a new production, because it’s never been done before.” Like Hasse’s “Solimano.” Or Vivaldi’s “Bajazet.” Or even “Semele,” which City Opera is doing for the first time.
Ms. Genaux comes by her exoticism — and her considerable linguistic abilities — honestly: her mother is from Mexico, but of Swiss and German heritage; her father, a college chemistry professor, is Belgian and Welsh; and she grew up in Fairbanks, Alaska. Music and dance were a natural way to help get through the long, dark winters. Ms. Genaux danced, played the violin and began studying voice at 13 in the studio of the esteemed soprano Dorothy Dow, when her family was on sabbatical for a semester in Galveston, Tex. Ms. Dow put Ms. Genaux on a serious diet of opera: Siebel’s aria from Gounod’s “Faust,” Musetta’s waltz from Puccini’s “Bohème.”
“I would be just absolutely painful on those high B-naturals with Musetta,” Ms. Genaux said, with her ready laugh, “and Dad was, like, ‘Is that going to hurt her?’ “ ‘No, no, her voice is going to open up.’ ”
“I think she really did know what she was talking about. But to the day she died, she maintained that I was a soprano, not a mezzo.”
Her later teachers — Virginia Zeani and, for the last 10 years, Claudia Pinza — may or may not have concurred. But the difference, in Ms. Genaux’s case, seems as much one of temperament as of timbre. She didn’t actually emerge as a mezzo until after her graduation from Indiana University (to which she had transferred after a few unhappy semesters at the University of Rochester, trying to follow her family’s scientific bent by studying genetics).
“I realized the characters seemed to be a lot more fun,” she said, adding that she didn’t have much of a taste for the consumptive heroines of the “Bohème” or “Traviata” variety. “I had always had problems with Mimi — ‘O, woe is me’ — and I didn’t like Violetta much, either.”
There was also, perhaps, a natural gravitation toward trouser roles. “Coming from Alaska,” Ms. Genaux said in a German television documentary about her life, “I always felt that the feminine side was not useful because you’re working in a very harsh environment where the most useful characteristic you can have is knowing how to change a tire at 40 below. It took me a long time to be comfortable with being feminine.”
So Ms. Genaux’s City Opera debut is a kind of departure. While her other Handel roles this year include Rodrigo, and Polimesso, the villain in “Ariodante,” she is, in “Semele,” singing not just one but two women: Juno, and Semele’s sister, Ino. Juno, particularly, is forcing her to confront issues of women and power head on.
“Juno is very much in control of the situation,” she said, “but not in a cutesy, manipulative kind of way, like the Rossini girls. It’s kind of like playing Caesar as a girl.”
Like Ms. Genaux, the director of “Semele,” Stephen Lawless, is a late convert to Handel: this is the first Handel opera he has done. But he needed little conversion to appreciate Ms. Genaux. René Jacobs, the acclaimed early-music conductor who led Ms. Genaux’s Farinelli album and several recordings since, is a good friend of his, Mr. Lawless said.
“He asked who was in ‘Semele,’ ” Mr. Lawless said, “and when he heard Vivica was in it, he said: ‘Wait. Just wait.’ ”
Despite Ms. Genaux’s newfound fondness for Handel, her heart belongs to the other composer on her new CD, Hasse, one of the most famous composers in the 18th century but obscure in the 21st.
“Singing Hasse is like being at a vocal spa, for me,” she said. “It just fits like a glove. It’s the only composer that I’ve found that I can just not worry about technique and not worry about me. I can just enter into that music and just glory in it, just have a great time.” The CD includes arias from “Arminio,” one of Hasse’s many operas, and one of his cantatas. He is also figuring prominently in her concert schedule for this season.
Still, she is looking forward to her coming Handel roles. Particularly Polimesso, which she is to sing in Paris in February. “I’m looking forward to playing an evil character for the first time,” she said with her inevitable laugh, eyes sparkling.
“I like liking Handel,” she said. And it’s a good bet that New York will like liking her.

The Natural World, in Peril and in Its Full Glory

“Ecotopia,” the edifying, entertaining and ecologically aware exhibition that opened last night at the International Center of Photography, means to get your attention. Near the entrance a looming, oozing black form threatens to engulf the show, like some leftover Valdez sludge trucked down from Alaska.
This enormous dollop is the first of several that punctuate the galleries. All are made, appropriately, of a lightweight, petroleum-based insulation material called Tubolit, widely used in the construction industry. An environmentally sound replacement for asbestos, Tubolit is recyclable, but it also offers further proof that the dependence on oil, foreign or otherwise, ranges far beyond gasoline.
Erupting from walls and doorways, lining windows and viewing rooms, and providing shelves for video screens and computer monitors, the meandering Tubolit globs manage to evoke not only sludge, but also toxic topiary, exotic rock formations and Flintstone-era habitats. Their symbolic versatility befits an exhibition in which nature is, by turns, magnificent, cute and enduring, while also increasingly dangerous and endangered, thanks to the widening scope of human indifference and exploitation.
“Ecotopia” is the center’s second “triennial of photography and video,” and like the first, it is purposefully germane. Its predecessor, “Strangers,” in 2003, explored the confusion of the post-9/11 world as it struggled with religious fundamentalism. Since the losses inflicted by the Indonesian tsunami and Hurricane Katrina, a fear of political chaos has been at least equaled by a fear that the natural world itself is fatally compromised.
As Al Gore notes toward the end of “An Inconvenient Truth,” the film in which he charts the grim, imminent future of global warming, terrorism is not the only, nor necessarily the most urgent, problem confronting us today.
“Ecotopia” might be described as “An Inconvenient Truth” in exhibition form. It is a tale of beauty and devastation told by nearly 40 photojournalists and artists. Their viewpoints vary, as do their subjects and forms, but you rarely escape a sense of nature’s vast, incalculable richness or of photography’s ability to do it justice. There may be no greater meeting of subject and medium.
Near the show’s first black bulge, you encounter Robert Adams’s almost reticent black-and-white photographs retracing the trail of Lewis and Clark through present-day Oregon and documenting the widespread ruin that foresting companies have visited upon the wilderness. Formally speaking, these images have a blankness, even a meanness, that is commensurate with the reckless disregard that motivated what they portray.
In marked contrast, Mitch Epstein’s breathtaking “Biloxi, Mississippi” (2005), a mural-size color image of a tree, is so glorious in scale that it may take you a few seconds to make out that there is a large mattress among its branches, and then a few more to realize that the scene is not a drought- and war-ravaged country, but the Gulf Coast of the United States, post-Katrina.
Nearby, Clifford Ross’s “Mountain XIII” provides an antidote: a monumental photograph whose majesty of peak, field, water, sky and reflection is equal to the reverent clarity of a Hudson River School painting.
Catherine Chalmers’s deeply Darwinian “Safari,” a seven-minute video, offers a ravishing experience of natural color by following the travails of some New York cockroaches, a species no longer found in the wild, after their release into an elaborate rain forest constructed in her studio. Other inhabitants include an African claw frog, for which cockroach spells dinner; red-spotted newts; a gorgeous lizard; a pair of ferociously battling beetles; and a harlequin cockroach, whose black and white stripes are ready for Fashion Week.
The show alternates between tragedy and comedy, and between hard truths and extensively manipulated fictions that assert their own reality.

Near the entrance a looming, oozing black form threatens to engulf the show, like some leftover Valdez sludge trucked down from Alaska.
This enormous dollop is the first of several that punctuate the galleries. All are made, appropriately, of a lightweight, petroleum-based insulation material called Tubolit, widely used in the construction industry. An environmentally sound replacement for asbestos, Tubolit is recyclable, but it also offers further proof that the dependence on oil, foreign or otherwise, ranges far beyond gasoline.
Erupting from walls and doorways, lining windows and viewing rooms, and providing shelves for video screens and computer monitors, the meandering Tubolit globs manage to evoke not only sludge, but also toxic topiary, exotic rock formations and Flintstone-era habitats. Their symbolic versatility befits an exhibition in which nature is, by turns, magnificent, cute and enduring, while also increasingly dangerous and endangered, thanks to the widening scope of human indifference and exploitation.
“Ecotopia” is the center’s second “triennial of photography and video,” and like the first, it is purposefully germane. Its predecessor, “Strangers,” in 2003, explored the confusion of the post-9/11 world as it struggled with religious fundamentalism. Since the losses inflicted by the Indonesian tsunami and Hurricane Katrina, a fear of political chaos has been at least equaled by a fear that the natural world itself is fatally compromised.
As Al Gore notes toward the end of “An Inconvenient Truth,” the film in which he charts the grim, imminent future of global warming, terrorism is not the only, nor necessarily the most urgent, problem confronting us today.
“Ecotopia” might be described as “An Inconvenient Truth” in exhibition form. It is a tale of beauty and devastation told by nearly 40 photojournalists and artists. Their viewpoints vary, as do their subjects and forms, but you rarely escape a sense of nature’s vast, incalculable richness or of photography’s ability to do it justice. There may be no greater meeting of subject and medium.
Near the show’s first black bulge, you encounter Robert Adams’s almost reticent black-and-white photographs retracing the trail of Lewis and Clark through present-day Oregon and documenting the widespread ruin that foresting companies have visited upon the wilderness. Formally speaking, these images have a blankness, even a meanness, that is commensurate with the reckless disregard that motivated what they portray.
In marked contrast, Mitch Epstein’s breathtaking “Biloxi, Mississippi” (2005), a mural-size color image of a tree, is so glorious in scale that it may take you a few seconds to make out that there is a large mattress among its branches, and then a few more to realize that the scene is not a drought- and war-ravaged country, but the Gulf Coast of the United States, post-Katrina.
Nearby, Clifford Ross’s “Mountain XIII” provides an antidote: a monumental photograph whose majesty of peak, field, water, sky and reflection is equal to the reverent clarity of a Hudson River School painting.
Catherine Chalmers’s deeply Darwinian “Safari,” a seven-minute video, offers a ravishing experience of natural color by following the travails of some New York cockroaches, a species no longer found in the wild, after their release into an elaborate rain forest constructed in her studio. Other inhabitants include an African claw frog, for which cockroach spells dinner; red-spotted newts; a gorgeous lizard; a pair of ferociously battling beetles; and a harlequin cockroach, whose black and white stripes are ready for Fashion Week.
The show alternates between tragedy and comedy, and between hard truths and extensively manipulated fictions that assert their own reality.
Noriko Furunishi’s lush and edgeless composite landscapes skew space and topography in ways that are all the more disorienting for still making sense. Thomas Ruff’s mural-size image of smoke trailing over the marshlands of southern Iraq was taken from the Internet and so deliberately eroded that it resembles a kind of blurred mosaic (and also hints at what it may feel like to be going blind).

Museums Fear Tax Law Changes on Some Donations

The tax law change, included in a little-noticed section of the Pension Protection Act that President Bush signed into law on Aug. 17, affects a practice known as fractional or partial giving, which has become an increasingly popular method for collectors to donate to museums. Proponents of the change say that fractional gifts — under which an artwork is “donated” but can remain largely in the owner’s possession — have been abused by wealthy donors, some of whom received upfront tax deductions for works that will not appear in museum collections for decades, if ever. The changes apply only to fractional gifts made after Aug. 17.
Among the thousands of works that have come to American museums through fractional giving in the past 15 years are Cézanne’s “Boy With a Red Vest” at the Museum of Modern Art, Magritte’s “Kiss” at the Houston Museum of Art, assemblages by Joseph Cornell in the Bergman Collection at the Art Institute of Chicago, and all 53 Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works that make up the Metropolitan Museum’s Annenberg Collection.
The Modern alone has some 650 works in its collection that began as partial gifts and has 600 more partial donations in the works, said Marie-Josée Kravis, the president of the museum’s board and a major art collector. Ms. Kravis and her husband, the financier Henry Kravis, have given a number of partial gifts to the museum, including Matisse’s “Plum Blossoms,” valued at $25 million.
In partial gifts, a donor gives a percentage interest in a work of art — say, 20 percent — to a museum or charity. The donor gets a tax deduction for an equivalent percentage of the work’s value. The museum gets the right to hold the work for a portion of the year, in this case 20 percent, or 73 days.
But the donor can continue to hold the art privately the rest of the time, and in practice many museums have waived their right to possess pieces at all except when they needed them for exhibitions. Donors can then make further fractional gifts in subsequent years, helping to spread out their tax deductions over a longer period. For museums, works that start out as fractional gifts almost always become full donations eventually.
Tax lawyers say that the new law, while not banning fractional gifts outright, creates enough disincentives to end the practice effectively.
“This is the death of fractional gifts,” said Ralph E. Lerner, a lawyer who specializes in art law at the firm of Sidley Austin in New York.
Still, some members of Congress saw the previous law as ripe for abuse and out of sync with most of the tax code, which does not allow fractional gifts of tangible assets and which tends to require that the public benefit for a charitable contribution occur in the same year that the taxpayer takes a deduction for the gift.
“This is a question of fairness,’’ said Senator Charles E. Grassley, an Iowa Republican and the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, which drafted the new rules. “It isn’t right for a donor to get a big tax break for supposedly donating a painting that hangs in his living room, not the museum, all year. A painting in a private living room doesn’t benefit the public.”
But as the escalating prices for art sold through dealers and auctions take many museums out of the market, art institutions point out that they have become more and more dependent on donors for new acquisitions. They view fractional giving as a critical way to attract valuable donations and cement relationships with wealthy art patrons.
About 80 percent of new acqusitions at American museums now come through donations. Major museum directors interviewed estimate that fractional gifts account for only about 10 percent of these donations, but that the works involved are often the most valuable and historically significant pieces. Without such donations, many say they worry that their ability to build collections will be severely crimped.
“It is a body blow,” Neal Benezra, director of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, said of the new law.
Museum officials say they were blindsided by the severe limitations placed on fractional giving, which were inserted into the pension bill with little chance for public scrutiny.
“We are working with our museum directors, and they are working with their representative in Congress to try to explain what a loss this will be to the public,” said Anita Difanis, director of government affairs for the Association of Art Museum DirectorsMs. Difanis said that Congress had no reason to change the previous law in the first place. She cited a Treasury Department Inspector General’s report released last month that found that art represents such a small fraction of all charitable contributions — less than 3 percent — that it was not worth revamping the I.R.S. rules governing such donations.

The Association of Museum Directors has proposed to members of Congress a number of revisions in the new law, Ms. Difanis said. The major New York museums have also contacted Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton and Charles E. Schumer, both Democrats, to voice their dismay. Mr. Schumer said in an e-mail message yesterday, “We must try to right this wrong.”
So far, no new bills have been introduced. Still, Glenn D. Lowry, director of the Museum of Modern Art, said he hoped Congress could be persuaded to change the new law. “I hope that many of these changes were not intentional,” he said. “Once we explain to the Senate why what was done with the best of intentions has ended up being a disaster, I hope we can get things corrected.”
The previous law on fractional gifts had two crucial advantages to donors: by allowing multiple fractional gifts of the same work over many years, donors could take advantage of a piece’s appreciation. If the art became more valuable, so did the tax deductions from each subsequent fractional gift.
The other advantage was that donors could continue to enjoy having works in their homes for a long time, sometimes until their deaths.
“It is really a driving force for people who are true collectors,” said Agnes Gund, a former president of the Modern and still one of its trustees. She has also donated a number of works to the museum as fractional gifts, including “Cathedral,” an Abstract Expressionist painting by Hans Hoffmann, and “Flashlight,” a Pop Art sculpture by Jasper Johns.
“If you are collecting because you love the art, you want to be able to enjoy the work while you have it and not give it away very soon,” she said.
Most museums make donors sign contracts guaranteeing that the work will eventually be given in full to the museum or bequeathed to it upon the collector’s death. (One notable exception was Gauguin’s “Still Life With Hope,” which was sold at auction in 1996 by the estate of the collector Joanne Toor Cummings, even though 20 percent of it had previously been donated to the Met.)
Under the new law, a ceiling is placed on the value of a work of art at the time of the first fractional donation, and the donor can no longer get larger deductions for later fractional gifts if the art appreciates. (If it declines in value, the taxpayer gets a lower deduction for subsequent donations.)
The law also says that museums must take “substantial possession” of the work of art following the initial gift and receive full ownership and possession of the object within 10 years.
Museum directors, tax lawyers and art patrons say this will discourage donations, particularly from younger donors, since collectors will now hold on to works as long as possible to maximize the potential tax benefit when they actually make the donations.
Under the new changes, there could also be significant estate tax penalties if donors make fractional gifts and then die while the work is still in their possession. Some lawyers, including Neil T. Kawashima of McDermott Will & Emery in Chicago, said that as a result, they are now advising clients to stop giving fractional donations.
“You can’t predict when you’ll die or how much the painting will appreciate, so my advice would be, don’t do it,” Mr. Kawashima said.
Mr. Lowry of the Modern and Sharon Cott, general counsel at the Metropolitan Museum, said they had heard from donors who had been advised not to make previously discussed gifts because of the new law.
Museum directors said that without fractional giving, more works of art will ultimately end up in estates, where they are far more likely to be sold off to private collectors than to art institutions.

And the elixir for this investor’s dream?
Well, once again, a reality show is drawing the crowds, this time one called “How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?” Maria is of course Maria von Trapp, the musical’s lead role, which Julie Andrews made famous on screen. And the “problem” is whom to cast in the onstage part, which calls for serious acting, dancing and singing, as well as a heavy dose of syrupy charm.
It was Lord Lloyd Webber’s idea, then, to hold a live talent competition in which television viewers would signal their favorite Maria hopeful, with those earning the fewest votes gradually being eliminated. In theory the eventual winner would have proved herself popular enough to carry the show when it opens at the London Palladium early in November.
The BBC was delighted. Albeit a public broadcaster, it had no hesitation about promoting a commercial production in exchange for a potentially popular new reality show. In ratings terms it was right: “Maria” has been drawing some six million viewers per installment, even challenging “The X Factor,” a more lowbrow talent show on the main competing channel.
Now the crunch is nigh. On Saturday, the three finalists from the 2,000 or so women who auditioned — Connie Fisher, 23; Siobhan Dillon, 21; and Helena Blackman, 23 — will have their last chance to woo the public. Then, after a 90-minute countdown, one will set off on a stage career blessed by Lord Lloyd Webber.
Not a bad start for a young woman with minimal professional experience: her name in lights, performing before some 2,500 people six nights a week, appearing alongside a much-loved British opera and crossover soprano, Lesley Garrett, in the role of Mother Superior — and all thanks to a reality show.
“The winner is given a six-month contract,” Ms. Fisher explained between rehearsals for last Saturday’s semifinals, adding with a wink of a smile, “But of course they have a get-out clause.”
As it happens, Lord Lloyd Webber and his co-producer, David Ian, proposed the “Maria” show only after they failed to secure Scarlett Johansson for the role, and they have hired a stand-in, Emma Williams, 23, to sing two performances a week — and no doubt more if television’s winning Maria falters onstage.
But for the moment, the focus is on Saturday’s eighth and final chapter of “How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?”
Starting in March of this year, auditions quickly whittled down the group of hopefuls to about 200, and then, after Lord Lloyd Webber had scanned scores of tapes, the field was narrowed further, to the 54 young women who were sent to a so-called Maria School. There, for the first time, they were given voice, dancing and acting lessons to prepare them for their first audition onstage for Lord Lloyd Webber.
The television show, which began July 29, devoted its first two episodes to film clips of these early stages, including those cringing moments when aspirants with neither voice nor looks had their 15 seconds of fame (or pain). Finally, amid buckets of tears of joy/dismay, 54 were brought down to 10, and the Marias were ready for public judgment.
By last Saturday, five contenders were left, with, as ever, Lord Lloyd Webber presiding on a throne accompanied by three critics — Mr. Ian; John Barrowman, a musical leading man familiar to West End audiences; and Zoë Tyler, a voice coach — and the show’s host, Graham Norton, a veteran of reality shows.
Viewing this as a ritualistic humbling (something of a given for many reality shows), the British theater director Trevor Nunn took a snipe last month at “Maria.”
“I think that what these reality programs more or less rely on is the viewing public being witness to distress,” he told The Times of London, “or being witness to coping with failure or inability to cope with failure.”
Naturally, Lord Lloyd Webber, who perchance in earlier times hired Mr. Nunn to direct musicals like “Cats” and “The Woman in White,” does not agree. “None of the girls feels at all exploited,” he said over lunch near his Belgravia home. “The bottom line is that these girls will have eight weeks of prime-time television and will be seen by more people than during a whole career onstage.”
The young women seem to consider blushing on nationwide television a small price to pay for the chance not only to play Maria, but also to gain the experience and exposure of the auditions.
“I think everything the judges say is constructive criticism,” said Ms. Dillon, who by her own admission felt insecure when the series began. “It makes things better, even if I feel self-conscious.”
Then come the drumroll moments. After each contender has performed, Mr. Norton gives the results of the first round of voting and names the two women with the fewest votes, who must engage in a “sing-off.” And it is then — twice each evening — that Lord Lloyd Webber can show his clout by “saving” one of two from elimination.
Last Saturday drama was added because Aoife Mulholland, 28, and Abi Finley, 23, now known to television viewers as close friends, had to face each other in a sing-off. Lord Lloyd Webber picked Ms. Mulholland. But after a second sing-off barely an hour later, it was Ms. Mulholland’s turn to leave as Ms. Blackman was “saved.”
As before, the show’s two parts then ended with first Ms. Finley, then Ms. Mulholland, being waved goodbye and serenaded by the survivors with “So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, adieu” from “The Sound of Music.” Parody? Presumably.
The twist is that this Saturday, only the public will pick the final winner, with Lord Lloyd Webber obliged to accept its choice. “The public has shown good judgment so far,” he said optimistically, “and I think any of these girls will be up to the role.”
He has still more reason for confidence because the BBC and some other producers are eager for him to take the Maria formula to the United States. “I heard the BBC was planning to do ‘Grease’ without me over there, but I reminded them that it was my idea,” he said. “Now after this success, they want to get me involved.”
But more than anything, he said, he welcomes the opportunity to draw the public’s attention to the whole genre of musical theater.
“My raison d’être is to bring it to the people,” he said, recalling his first hit, “Jesus Christ Superstar,” more than three decades ago, “and that’s what this show does, week after week.”

The Lonelygirl That Really Wasn’t

The woman who plays Lonelygirl15 on the video-sharing site YouTube.com has been identified as Jessica Rose, a 20-ish resident of New Zealand and Los Angeles and a graduate of the New York Film Academy. And the whole project appears to be the early serialized version of what eventually will become a movie.
Matt Foremski, the 18-year-old son of Tom Foremski, a reporter for the blog Silicon Valley Watcher, was the first to disinter a trove of photographs of the familiar-looking actress, who portrayed the character named Bree in the videos. The episodes suggested Bree was the home-schooled daughter of strictly religious parents who was able to find the time to upload video blogs of her innermost thoughts.
The discovery and the swift and subsequent revelation of other details surrounding the perpetrators of the videos and the fake fan site that accompanied it are bringing to an end one of the Internet’s more elaborately constructed mysteries. The fans’ disbelief in Lonelygirl15 was not willingly suspended, but rather teased and toyed with. Whether they will embrace the project as a new narrative form, condemn it or simply walk away remains to be seen.
The masterminds of the Lonelygirl15 videos are Ramesh Flinders, a screenwriter and filmmaker from Marin County, Calif., and Miles Beckett, a doctor turned filmmaker. The high quality of the videos caused many users to suspect a script and production crew, but Bree’s bedroom scenes were shot in Mr. Flinders’s home, in his actual bedroom, typically using nothing more than a Logitech QuickCam, a Web camera that retails for about $150.
Together with Grant Steinfeld, a software engineer in San Francisco, Mr. Flinders contrived to produce and distribute the videos to pique maximum curiosity about them.
The photographs of the actress, which made it clear that Ms. Rose has been playing Bree in the videos, were cached on Google.
“We were all under N.D.A.’s” Mr. Steinfeld said, referring to non-disclosure agreements the cast — and their friends — were asked to sign to preserve the mystery of Lonelygirl15. “They had a lawyer involved,” he said. “My first impression was like, wow, can this be legitimate? Is this ethical? I was very concerned about that in the beginning.”
But after he came to understand the project, Mr. Steinfeld said, he came to believe that something truly novel was at hand. “They were like the new Marshall McLuhan.”
Mr. Flinders and Mr. Beckett obscured their location by sending e-mail messages as Bree from various Internet computer addresses, including the address of Creative Artists Agency, the Beverly Hills talent agency where the team is now represented. Amanda Solomon Goodfried, an assistant at the agency, is believed to have helped Mr. Flinders and Mr. Beckett conceal their identities. Moreover, Ms. Goodfried’s father-in-law, Kenneth Goodfried, a lawyer in Encino, filed to trademark “Lonelygirl15” in August.
The story of how Mr. Flinders, Mr. Beckett and Ms. Rose were discovered in spite of their efforts to hide, and prolong the mystery, sheds light on the nature of online wiki-style investigations and manhunts. When Mr. Steinfeld’s dummy site, which had been set up before the first Lonelygirl15 video was even posted, struck users as suspicious and unsupervised — Mr. Steinfeld says he grew tired of running it, and dropped out of the project — fans set up their own site devoted to Lonelygirl15, which soon attracted more than a thousand members.
Both sites drew contributions from novelists, journalists, academics, day traders, lawyers, bloggers, filmmakers, video game designers, students, housewives, bored youngsters and experts on religion and botany. In the cacophony of conjecture, analysis, close-readings, jokes, insults, and distractions, good information sometimes surfaced.
Last month, a Lonelygirl15 fan discovered and posted a trademark application by Mr. Goodfried, which seemed to prove that the videos, which presented themselves as nothing but a video diary, were at least in part a commercial venture. Then, last week, three tech-savvy fans, working together, set up a sting on the e-mail being used by “Bree”; the operation revealed to them the I.P. address of Creative Artists Agency.
On the strength of this information, Mr. Foremski was confident he could find some trace of Bree on the Internet. He was sure that any participant in a semiprofessional production like Lonelygirl15 would have posted pictures somewhere. Sure enough, they had.
Mr. Steinfeld, on learning that Mr. Flinders and Mr. Beckett had been found out, offered his photographs of Ms. Rose as proof of his involvement in the Lonelygirl15 videos. He had been hired to take the pictures on the set at the start of shooting.
The series, which Mr. Flinders and Mr. Beckett plan to continue on a site overseen by them, may play differently with fans now that they know for sure that Bree is an actress. Part of the appeal of the series was that the serious-minded, literate Bree offered an unbeatable fantasy: a beautiful girl who techy guys had something in common with.
On learning that Ms. Rose was an actress whose interests, unlike the scientific and religious issues that fascinated Bree, ran to parties and posing, one fan wrote, “Very cute, but she’s really not into Feynmann and Jared Diamond! (I’m heart-broken ...But a wonderful actress, had me fooled into thinking she was a geek like me.)”

Liberating Miss Alma, a Heroine at Last

Oh, she still flutters and hyperventilates and laughs when nervous, which is often. But as portrayed with blessed restraint and care by Amanda Plummer in Michael Wilson’s vapors-clearing production, Alma reveals a core of expansive honesty and empathy that sets her apart — more than any surface affectations — in a small-minded, intolerant world.
Suddenly it seems clear that Alma is not a victim, or not only that; she is a heroine. Her attraction to the studly young doctor next door (an excellent Marc Kudisch) no longer feels merely pathetic, but somehow ennobling as well. You are unlikely to leave this production patronizingly clucking, “Poor Alma.” You are equally unlikely to leave without tears in your eyes.
The liberation of Miss Alma from the sideshow freak’s cage to which she has often been confined would surely have delighted Williams, who called her his favorite of his characters and cautioned against exaggerated portrayals of her.
The even better news is that Ms. Plummer’s Alma appears to be a part of a hope-inspiring trend in the treatment of Williams in American theater, an approach that scales down the obvious Southern-fried grotesqueness in favor of the all-inclusive humanity that saturates his work.
In the past few months alone regional productions in the Northeast have helped restore human dimensions to characters that have traditionally appeared as billboard-size cartoons. They include Alexandra del Lago, the monster movie star from “Sweet Bird of Youth,” portrayed with redemptive self-awareness by Margaret Colin at the Williamstown Theater Festival, and Reverend Shannon, the volcanic alcoholic minister from “Night of Iguana,” rendered with eye-opening feminine passivity by Garret Dillahunt at the Berkshire Theater Festival.
Two years ago at the Kennedy Center in Washington, Sally Field found the bone-weariness and loving maternal anxiety in Amanda Wingfield, the child-warping mother from “A Glass Menagerie.” These were all performances that might be called small compared to the bluster of Broadway star turns.
Perhaps Broadway, hardly a harbor for subtlety these days, demands an operatic fervor for audiences to feel they have been given their money’s worth. (It’s telling though that Broadway hasn’t seen a great production of a Tennessee Williams play since Trevor Nunn’s staging of “Not About Nightingales” in 1999.)
But for those of us who feel Williams is so much more than a sensationalist, the rewards of looking at his characters through a microscope instead of a magnifying class are incalculable. I was never, for example, a great fan of “Summer and Smoke.” First produced in 1948 (and filmed in 1961 with the Method Acting sweetheart Geraldine Page as Alma), this story of the hopeless love of a chaste preacher’s daughter for a big, strong man can smack of the simplistic Freudianism that possessed mainstream American intellectuals in the mid 20th century.
Certainly that’s what comes across in Ms. Page’s meticulous film performance of a part she had played, to great acclaim, in a benchmark Off Broadway revival in 1952. Her hands restlessly roving her throat and chest, her voice a tremulous whine, she seemed to invite the frat boy’s classic (and unsavory) prescription for an uptight woman.
The dichotomy between spirit (the ethereal Ms. Page) and flesh (embodied by a cold, virile Laurence Harvey as the doctor) was writ so large it glared at you. A Broadway revival in 1996, starring Mary McDonnell and Harry Hamlin, suffered from the same reductionist approach. And in fairness, it’s hard to avoid this sensibility in a play in which a life-size (and visible) human anatomy chart and a statue of an angel named Eternity are the central symbols.
Statue and chart are neatly in place in Mr. Wilson’s production, designed with unconfining airiness by Tony Straiges. But for once they don’t dominate the stage. Mr. Wilson is less interested in symbols than in the natural flow of life and the ways it propels people into collision and isolation.
The production does not ignore or overcome the schematic melodrama that forces its conclusion. But every character is drawn with sympathy and an awareness of Williams’s vision of human existence, even in a crowd, as a state of unending “solitary confinement.”
Williams perceived a baleful, gut-busting humor in this existential joke. And it feels right that in this production, as delivered by Ms. Plummer, Alma’s frequent laughter has a wounded knowingness. This is not genteel tittering, to paper over awkward silences, but something deeper and more spontaneous. You sense the genuine intelligence within Alma’s arty affectations. Just as crucially, you sense a moral confidence that goes deeper than the pious platitudes of her father, Reverend Winemiller (Terry Beaver).
A specialist in extreme eccentrics on stage (“Agnes of God”) and screen (“Pulp Fiction”), Ms. Plummer would appear an unlikely candidate for finding the natural woman in Alma. But she underplays beautifully here, emphasizing an outsider’s quiet watchfulness, which lurks behind the strained social facade, and a kindliness toward her fellow outcasts. Not that she’s a saint. This Alma is willful and even harsh in the face of her father’s censoriousness and the childish malice of her mad, useless mother (an appropriately affecting and irritating Jennifer Harmon).
You can see why John Buchanan Jr., the hedonistic young doctor Alma has known since their shared childhood, would be attracted to her. John isn’t a fully drawn role, but Mr. Kudisch (best known for Broadway musicals like “Thoroughly Modern Millie” and “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang”) strikes an artful balance between sensual self-indulgence and moral self-disgust.
When this Alma and John get together, a current of mutual understanding courses between them, despite the often rancorous tone of their conversation. They complement each other not because they’re such obvious opposites, but because each contains strong, if unacknowledged, elements of the other. They were meant to be together, which in Williams’s world means they never will be.
To this production’s credit it makes clear that John is ultimately the more conventional of the pair and destined to lead a more confined, traditional life. In the concluding scene, still a quiet shocker, Alma seems poised to become an outcast of society, rather like her better-known spiritual sister Blanche DuBois of “A Streetcar Named Desire.”
The world is a cold and lonely place, and if a lost soul needs the occasional tranquillizer or kindly stranger to make it through the night, who’s going to blame her?
As Alma, who says she is always “mystified and amazed” by the unprovoked malice of others, puts it, “Life is such a mysteriously complicated thing that no one should presume to judge and condemn the behavior of anyone else.” These might be the watchwords of everything Williams wrote. How heartening it is to see productions that treat his plays with a similar lack of preconceptions and, yes, a touch of kindness.

Learning Nuances of Ballet From a Master of Fusion

If you asked a New York ballet dancer to name the teacher of the moment, Azari Plisetski would probably not spring to mind. But Mikhail Baryshnikov would like to change that. A major admirer of Mr. Plisetski, 69, who is widely credited with rejuvenating Cuban ballet in the 1960’s and bringing Cuban male dancers to the fore internationally, Mr. Baryshnikov invited Mr. Plisetski to teach professional classes this week at his studios on West 37th Street.

“When you see a Cuban dancer, he moves like nobody else, but in such a simple, noble manner,” Mr. Baryshnikov said after class on Tuesday.
He invited Mr. Plisetski, the younger brother of the ballerina Maya Plisetskaya, because of the way his teaching fuses many styles of dancing. “French, Bolshoi, his Cuban experience, even a little Stanley,” Mr. Baryshnikov said, referred to the revered Danish teacher Stanley Williams.
Fifteen dancers from American Ballet Theater took the Tuesday class, which began with lush, lyrical stretching sequences at the barre and moved on to combinations of steps in the center that were filled with quick, finicky footwork that demanded extreme physical control.
Mr. Plisetski spoke quietly and succinctly, sometimes communicating combinations with the time-honored ballet device of moving his fingers through the steps like agile schools of fish. “Et one, et two, et one, two, three,” he called out in a polyglot ballet language, occasionally consulting José Manuel Carreño, a star on the stage but a student here, in Spanish about a better choice of words. Nothing was pushed; corrections tended to be individual and murmured.
His focus, Mr. Plisetski said, was the coordination of the arms and “more expression in the neck and head.” Nuances were important, he said. He imitated a dancer executing a basic step with his head up and then slightly down, a seemingly minor detail that enhanced and then diminished the effect of the airy pulled-up body Mr. Plisetski seemed to emphasize in the class. “It’s like a little seasoning,” he added. “And it’s also important not to exaggerate.”
Mr. Plisetski spoke of teaching small boys in Cuba early in his time there, all from orphanages because boys from good Cuban families did not study ballet in the 1960’s.
“I made a little choreography for them, a joke,” he said, demonstrating a dashing saber dance. “You understand?” he asked the children, teaching them a formal ballet exercise for the first time. “Yes,” they answered.
But the sequence, danced once again in the Baryshnikov studio by Mr. Plisetski, suddenly had lilting rumba hips. “I understood immediately that for each people the word is the same, but with a different pronunciation.”
Mr. Baryshnikov said he was thinking of having twice-yearly series of classes at the Baryshnikov Arts Center, inviting ballet teachers from a variety of backgrounds to teach professional dancers, with question-and-answer sessions after class. “To get a ‘second opinion,’ ” he said. “To practice their craft. You cannot live in a ghetto.”
For Mr. Baryshnikov the future of classical ballet lies in the teaching of it. “The initiative comes from the school, the teaching,” he said.
He and Mr. Plisetski, who now teaches at Maurice Béjart’s school in Lausanne, Switzerland, spoke of long-ago fellow dancers and of teachers. “You took my first class, in 1975, at Roland Petit’s,” Mr. Plisetski reminded Mr. Baryshnikov, who was then learning that French choreographer’s dramatic, stylized “Jeune Homme et la Mort.”
Yet another influence to be added to the mix. “It’s fusion that gives the good results,” Mr. Plisetski said. “As in natural selection.”

He put a quarter into the hat of a blind man sitting by the door, and took a train. Three hours later he arrived at his native town, went directly to the cafe of his old friend Mike Dolan and shook hands with Mike, who was alone behind the counter. “Sorry we couldn’t make it sooner, Jimmy, my boy,” said Mike. “It wasn’t so easy this time and we had a lot of trouble. Are you all right?”

It was a complete set, made of special steel. The set consisted of various tools of the latest design. He had invented two or three of them himself, and was very proud of them. Over nine hundred dollars they had cost him! They had been made at X., a place where they make such things for the profession.

A few days later the Jefferson City Bank was robbed and banknotes amounting to five thousand dollars were taken. The losses were now so high that it was time for so well known a detective as Ben Price to begin investigation. When all the cases were compared, a striking similarity in the methods of burglaries was noticed. Ben Price investigated the scenes of the robberies and was heard to say.

He took it quietly; he was too tired to show excitement. He had been in prison nearly ten months and he had been sentenced to four years. True, he had expected to stay only about three months, at the longest. He had a lot of friends and he had been sure they would help him.

The clerk handed him a railroad ticket and the five-dollar bill with which he was supposed to start a new, honest life. The warden gave him a cigar, and they shook hands. Valentine, 9762, was registered on the books “Pardoned by Governor,” and Mr. James Valentine walked out into the sunshine.

I followed him through a tour of the house, then accepted when he offered me a cup of tea. Barry had a sophisticated kindness about him and listened attentively as I chattered nervously about myself. His silver-rimmed glasses accented a few gray streaks in his dark hair. Soon, his warm, inviting smile put me at ease, and we spent the next two hours talking casually. Ultimately, I decided not to take the room and reluctantly bade him good-bye.

"This is a chance of a life time," I declared to my friend Stacy as I locked the door of my office and left the restaurant I managed. "It's every twenty-seven-year-old woman's dream to live in New York City, and in a few months I'll know if I get the transfer."

"This is his number. He's a forty-two-year-old confirmed bachelor. Says he's much too busy being a single dad to be a husband."

独自看<<美国往事>>也是一年前的往事了吧,就想电影中的面条,独自静默着把往事回忆,不同的是我却没有袅袅青烟萦绕.有人说,整个人生都写在里面.友情,爱情,金钱,梦想相互交织,相互纠缠.时光的流转,与情节的回闪.就象华尔兹中不停交换的舞伴,记忆被打落成碎片,一段段人生就在这舞曲中慢慢展现,往事在几十年前发生,思考却在几十年以后,曾经的少年已经白发斑斑,曾经的恩怨情愁是不是也烟消云散?人到老年对于往事的回忆总有几分矜持,回首少年的自己纵然是充满盛气,曾经的少年对于眼前的花花世界有多么的冲动,如今的老者直面人生的沧海桑田就有多么冷静,人的容颜总是抵挡不住时光荏苒,只有那双难忘的眼睛清晰可见.美国往事所蕴涵的人生是由观众来体会的,有人说,往事不堪回首,这句话在我看来是对于主人公最好的诠释,但是当他自己的生命将要走到尽头的时候,他一无所有,除了记忆他真的一无所有,那么除了回首往事,他还能够做什么呢?我突然感到有一丝不安,因为当我想要回忆痛心往事的时候,总是需要些勇气的,因为在我看来那又是一次摧残.而他确实那么从容,难道是岁月让他把人生看穿,还是老来回首根本不需要什么勇气?主人公的人生那么深刻,导演给观众的诠释却也如此脱透,使人在思考中,不禁为之叹服.也许剧本只有一个,但是人们解读他所透过的一张张或丑或美的脸.
